Hometown and Background （出身地と経歴）
The question “Where are you from?” is a very difficult question for me to answer. My ethnicity, my birthplace, and the city I grew up in are all different. Sometimes the term “third culture kid” is applied to people like me. This refers to people who were raised in a culture or country different from their parent’s culture or country.

「あなたはどこから来ましたか？」という質問は、私にとって非常に難しい質問です。私の民族、出生地、そして育った都市は全て異なります。時々、「第三文化の子供 -サードカルチャーキッズ 」という言葉が私のような人々に適用されます。これは、親の文化や国と異なる文化や国で育った人々を指します。
My parents and my grandparents are from a small country in the Caucasus region called Armenia. Armenia is next to countries such as Turkey, Iran and Georgia.
I was born in Moscow, Russia but when I was 2 years old we moved to Sydney, Australia.

私の両親と祖父母は、コーカサス地域にある小さな国、アルメニア出身です。アルメニアはトルコ、イラン、ジョージアなどの国に隣接しています。
私はロシアのモスクワで生まれましたが、2歳の時にオーストラリアのシドニーに引っ越しました。

Australia is a very multicultural country, with 1 in 4 people being born overseas! I grew up in Western Sydney and in my area, there were many Philippino, Polish, and Indian people, a really random mix! Growing up in a multicultural neighborhood allowed me to learn more about the world and its different cultures.
Also, although my family was in Australia my parents made sure to teach me about Armenian and Russian culture. The two cultures and languages are very different but Armenia was previously part of the USSR which influenced many things in Armenia that still remain today.

オーストラリアは非常に多文化な国で、4人に1人が海外生まれです！私は西シドニーで育ちましたが、その地域にはフィリピン人、ポーランド人、インド人など、本当にさまざまな人々がいました！多文化の地域で育ったことで、世界や異なる文化についてもっと学ぶことができました。
また、私の家族はオーストラリアにいましたが、両親は私にアルメニアとロシアの文化を教えるように心がけました。両文化や言語は大きく異なりますが、アルメニアは以前、ソビエト連邦の一部であり、その名残があります。

When I was in university, I studied a double degree in Business and International Studies. As part of my international Studies degree, I was able to study at Kansai Gaidai (one semester) and Meiji University (short program). It was during this time I felt I really wanted to live in Japan. So after I graduated I applied for the JET Programme and got placed in Himeji where I taught English to senior high school students for five years. After teaching for five years I moved to Kyoto so I could study for my master’s degree in Business Administration at Doshisha University.

大学時代には、ビジネスと国際学の二重学位を専攻しました。国際学の学位の一環として、関西外国語大学（1学期）と明治大学（短期プログラム）で学ぶ機会を得ました。その時に日本に住みたいと本当に感じました。卒業後、JETプログラムに応募し、姫路に配属され、そこで5年間、高校生に英語を教えました。5年間教鞭をとった後、同志社大学で経営学の修士号を取得するために京都に引っ越しました。

Interests and Hobbies　（趣味）
I’m been traveling since I was a baby, so naturally, I love to travel! I’ve been to 13 countries and traveled to 20 prefectures in Japan! I think my favorite place in Japan is Kamikochi. I try to visit every autumn to see the beautiful autumn scenery and enjoy the outdoor onsens in the region.

私は赤ちゃんの頃から旅をしているので、当然、旅行が大好きです！世界の13カ国に行き、日本の20の県を訪れました！私が日本で一番好きな場所は上高地です。美しい秋の景色を見て地域の屋外温泉を楽しむため、毎年秋に訪れるようにしています。

I enjoy watching movies and dramas, when I was in Australia I watched a lot of J-dramas such as Hana Yori Dango, Hana Kimi, Nodame Cantabile, and Legal High! I’m also a huge fan of One Piece, my favorite character is Nico Robin!

映画やドラマを観るのが好きで、オーストラリアにいた時は、「花より男子」や「花ざかりの君たちへ」、「のだめカンタービレ」、「リーガルハイ」などの日本のドラマをたくさん観ました！また、ワンピースの大ファンで、お気に入りのキャラクターはニコ・ロビンです！

In my free time, I enjoy going to different cafes and eating sweets. If you visit Himeji I recommend Carma Cafe, if you visit Kobe I recommend Cafe de Agenda (if you like cake) and Mahisa (especially if you love black tea). If you visit Kyoto I recommend Cafe Yojik. Actually, Cafe Yojik specializes in Russian and some ex-USSR countries’ cuisine – here you can find Georgian cheese bread (khachapuri) and dumplings (khinkali). I’m hoping one day I can find an Armenian cafe in Japan (the closest cuisines are Turkish and Persian but there are still some differences).

自由な時間には、様々なカフェに行ってスイーツを楽しむのが好きです。姫路を訪れる場合は、チャルマカフェをおすすめします。神戸を訪れる場合は、ケーキが好きならカフェ デ アゲンダを、紅茶が大好きなら特にマヒシャ 紅茶専門店をおすすめします。京都を訪れる場合は、カフェ ヨージクをおすすめします。実は、カフェ ヨージクはロシアや元ソ連諸国の料理を専門としており、ここではジョージアのチーズパン（ハチャプリ）や餃子（ヒンカリ）をいただくことができます。いつか日本でアルメニアのカフェを見つけたいと願っています（最も近い料理はトルコ料理とペルシャ料理ですが、いくつかの違いがあります）。

I also enjoy taking photos, particularly of scenery! During my first trip to Japan in 2013 I took this photo in Nara. In 2020 some news agencies used this picture to talk about how deer were going to the city because of no tourists. The photo was totally unrelated to COVID-19 but it was shared a lot haha.

写真、特に風景を撮るのも好きです！2013年の初めての日本旅行中に、奈良でこの写真を撮りました。2020年には、何かのニュース機関がこの写真を使って、観光客がいないために鹿が市街地にやってくるという話題にしました。その写真はコロナとは全く関係ありませんでしたが、たくさん共有されました（笑）。

Reflection on my time in Japan (日本滞在を振り返って)

In total, I have lived in Japan for 7 years. For the first 5 years, I lived in the countryside of Himeji (Tatsuno City). During that time I learned a lot about living alone as well as how to teach to students. One of the things I enjoyed teaching about was Armenian culture, through teaching it I came to love it more. Many people who come to Japan are told to minimize their “foreignness” if they want to be accepted by Japanese society but I think that is wrong. It is important to be yourself and love your roots! Many people here are interested in foreign cultures and want to learn more about them.

私は日本に合計すると7年間住んでいます。最初の5年間は、姫路の田舎（たつの市）に住んでいました。その間に、一人暮らしや生徒への教え方についてたくさん学びました。生徒たちにアルメニアの文化を教えるのは楽しくて、教えることを通じてよりアルメニアに愛着を持つようになりました。日本に来る多くの人々は、日本社会に受け入れられるためには「外国らしさ」を最小限に抑えるように言われますが、私はそれが間違っていると考えています。自分らしくあり、自分のルーツを愛することが重要です！ここでは多くの人々が外国の文化に興味を持ち、それについてもっと学びたいと思っています。

One of the most unique experiences for me was being photographed in my traditional Armenian clothes (Taraz) for Kokuten (the largest public art exhibition in Japan). My portrait traveled to many prefectures in Japan and even went to Seoul! It still feels surreal to me, especially because I’m actually a very shy person. But I’m happy I could showcase my culture on a national level.

私にとって最もユニークな経験の一つは、日本最大の公募の芸術展である「国展」のために伝統的なアルメニア服（タラズ）で写真撮影されたことです。私の肖像画は日本の多くの県を巡り、ソウルにも行きました！実際、私はとても内向的な人間なので、それがまだ夢のように感じられます。しかし、私の文化を全国的なレベルで紹介できたことが嬉しいです。

Additionally, while I was a teacher I was the leader of the volunteer association of participants in the JET Programme (AJET). During this time I had to give information to the participants about living in Japan. I realized that a lot of materials were not available in English so I took it upon myself to make these materials so that people could have an easier time living in Japan. Now as a graduate student, I continue to help my classmates with similar matters. I also continue to help JET participants through the alumni network of JETAAWJ.

さらに、教師の間、私はJETプログラム参加者のボランティア協会（AJET）のリーダーでした。この期間中、日本での生活について参加者へ情報提供を行わなければなりませんでした。英語で利用できる資料がほとんどないことに気付き、日本で生活しやすくするためにはこれらの資料を作ることを自らの責任としました。今は大学院生として、同じような問題を抱えるクラスメイトを支援し続けています。また、JET参加者をJETAAWJの卒業生ネットワークを通じて支援し続けています

I’ve been an intern at Export Japan for almost 2 months now and am learning a lot about marketing and creating materials for non-Japanese speakers. I hope I can continue to learn and work here!

私は今、Export Japanでほぼ2か月間、インターンとして働いており、マーケティングや外国人向けの資料作りなど、たくさんのことを学んでいます。これからもここで学び、働き続けたいと思っています！
