Hello. My name is Yeon Jae Lee and I have joined the Tokyo office as an intern from May 7th. I would like to introduce and tell about myself by answering to the following questions.

■ Where are you from? (city name and country)
Please tell us about the good points of your city

I am from Seoul, Korea. I was born in Seoul and ever since then, except for the times I have spent abroad, I am living in Seoul. There is an English phrase we use, to tell about our city to foreigners which is “Seoul, the soul of Asia”. Just like its phrase, you can be at the heart of Asian culture and enjoy the unique Korean culture. Seoul is a city where history/tradition coexists with modernity. You can see beautiful palaces, han-ok (Korean traditional houses), world heritages, etc., along with contemporary buildings, squares, shopping districts, and more. Also, we can eat many kinds of delicious foods as there are many famous restaurants. Fashion and beauty products cannot be left out when introducing Seoul as they are going viral and becoming popular worldwide. There are shopping districts where you can see or purchase clothes and cosmetics which are always crowded with Koreans and tourists. If you have the chance, please visit Seoul and enjoy all the things I have mentioned above.

■ Where is your recommended location in Japan?

My recommended location in Japan is Kawagoe. It is located near Tokyo but its atmosphere is completely different from that of big and bustling places like Shibuya, Shinjuku, etc. I felt that it was like “little Kyoto” as it looked very traditional. Since Kawagoe is close to Tokyo, it is a perfect place to go on a quick one-day trip to feel the traditional ambience. There are many kimono renting shops as well so it would be a great experience to walk around Kawagoe with kimono on. Additionally, Kawagoe is famous for sweet potatoes so trying out delicious snacks made of sweet potatoes are another fun to catch.

■ What are your interests or hobbies?

My hobby is watching movies and going to game stations to play games. I enjoy watching a wide range of genres such as romance, comedy, animation, etc. To decide or choose which movie to watch, I usually go into YouTube and see some reviews and recommendations. My other hobby is going to game stations. At first, I was surprised by the scale of game stations in Japan. Not only are there many stations all over Tokyo, but they are extremely big in size and thus, have numerous kinds of games. I think it is a best place for me to relieve stress and to socialize with friends in Tokyo.

■ What is the weirdest thing for you in Japan?

I don’t want to use the word “weird” but what made me surprise was the majority of people not moving or leaving at the movie theater even after a movie ended and the ending credits were being screened. The lights don’t go on as well and people just sit and watch the countless names go up and up for quite a long time. In Korea, where I grew up, as soon as the movie ends, the lights go on so that people can leave and everyone goes out while the ending credit just goes up by itself. I asked my Japanese friend about it and she told me that you can leave if you want to, but most people would just stay seated as they consider the movie to have completely ended after the ending credit is fully screened. It was something very new to me and I had a unique experience at the movie theater in Japan.

My first major in my university is Asian Studies so I have always been interested in the languages of Asian countries, especially Chinese and Japanese.  And it was when I came to Japan in 2016 that made inspired to learn Japanese. I had the desire to communicate in Japanese and understand it and this was when I thought about studying Japanese for the first time. Later in 2017, I had made many Japanese friends in Sydney during the exchange program and started to learn Japanese from them. This became the start and ever since I am continuously trying hard to improve my Japanese. Moreover, many Korean companies and organizations prefer students who are capable of speaking 3rd language other than English, as many Korean students are already fluent in English. Therefore, Japanese has become more crucial to me as it could make me more competitive and this motivates and inspires me to study Japanese harder.

■ What are you expecting from this internship program?

I have been doing remote work of translations back in Korea for a few months. However, from this internship program in Tokyo office, not only do I want to engage in translations on the spot, but I also would like to see, learn, and participate in other various projects others are doing so that I can enlarge my participation and knowledge sphere to different fields as well. I am also trying to think, plan, and work on my own project that can be helpful and useful to Export Japan and to myself. Thus, I expect myself to have improved in translations, learned and took part in other projects Export Japan is doing other than translations, and to have completed a project of my own that could be helpful to my future career.
